Brownsburg, IN (46112)
Area Code: 317
In 1834, William Harris platted a town
named “Harrisburgh,” but the name was short-lived. Renamed
for one of the first settlers, James B. Brown, the town was
founded in 1836 when a post office opened. Incorporated in
1848, it stayed a quiet community until the 1990s, when
suburban growth expanded the population by over 90%.
A small business district has been
maintained at the intersection of U.S. Highway 136 and State
Road 267. In the 19th century, as many as 100
horse-drawn wagons congregated at this always-busy
junction. Within a block of these crossroads (also known as
Green and Main Streets) are a modern Town Hall, state of the
art Fire and Police headquarters facility, and the
Brownsburg Chamber of Commerce.
Several retail strip shopping centers can
be found on Main Street on the east side. A large shopping
are is located to the north, where State Road 267 and I-74
meet. Located with several blocks of this interchange are
the post office, motel, industrial park, business parks,
medical offices and restaurants. Major retailers Wal-Mart
and K-Mart join other smaller shops and stores here. Many
of these shops are locally owned and operated.
Brownsburg has three golf courses within
10 minutes. Seven other public links and three public
swimming pools are within 25 minutes. There are four
municipal parks with tennis courts, playgrounds, ball
diamonds, and picnic shelters. Brownsburg’s parks also
offer outdoor basketball, sand volleyball courts, walking
trails, horseshoe pits and Junior Football fields and Soccer
Fields. |
